Prov. 16:9 A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.

It’s easy for us to make plans for the future but it’s hard for us to live in the moment. In our hearts, we essentially know what we want. We decide what subject area we will study based on the type of career that we want.

We plan to get married at a certain age, to have children, to finish college, to be made partner at a prominent law firm or achieve that dream job but did we stop to consider the plans God has in store for us?

Nowadays, you’ll hardly find someone who doesn’t have plans for the future, because we all do but are our plans and desires aligned with the ones God predestined for our lives?

By now according to the plans that I’ve made I would have already had my master’s degree and pursued my career plan to help those in need. I would also have published one of many novels I’ve started and stopped over the years.

God knows best.
God has your best interests at heart.

Left to ourselves we would probably do more harm than good. We make our plans but ultimately God’s plans will overrule in the end. I’m choosing to be happy that the Lord will direct my steps because he knows best.

If you were to pick someone to sit and glean from in any course of study that you desired to learn; you would pick the person that hasn’t just finished learning but has been successful in that course of study for a number of years.

Why is it then that we think we know what’s best for ourselves? How is it even possible that we could direct our steps when we don’t even know what will happen tomorrow? Will we even have the opportunity to see tomorrow?

You can be engaged and your fiancé breaks the engagement unexpectedly.

Your husband might have come home to reveal a secret that shakes the very foundation of your marriage.

That person that was all enthusiastic about going into business with you suddenly disappears with your life savings in tow.

Or you may be about to make a decision about settling down with someone who you know isn’t the person for you.

Whatever the situation, it is best to let God be in control. Let him make the final decision and when you pray and you feel the Holy Spirit prompting that something is off with the deal or decision, you’re about to make listen and obey.

It is better to obey than sacrifice.

I know this is easier said than done. But once you allow God to lead and take the helm once, the next time will be much easier. Until you get familiar with the prompting of His spirit, until you adhere to the godly advice of friends and family or you hear a story about the way a similar situation your facing messed up someone else’s life, remember that God knows best.

Will you be grateful that God is planning your next big move whether it’s good or bad?

Prayer for today:

Abba Father,

I humbly come to you today thanking you for being my creator. Help me to remember dear Lord because I am prone to forget. Help me to remember that you know what is best. You are in control and you know exactly what is ahead. I can’t see into the future but knowing that you can see into the future as well as my present and past is comfort enough. I seek to have faith in who you are and the plans that you have for my life.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
