When I was about 10 or 11, I remember one of my elementary teachers, who led general assembly (morning devotions) gave us a challenge. She asked us to write out as many names as we could find that belonged to God. At the time I wasn’t aware that there is power in His name.
Although I was a Christian, my finite mind couldn’t get past a few names and there wasn’t any access to the internet just yet. When I got home, I went through my dad’s library until I found a book that gave me, literally thousands of names of God. I quickly wrote out 1000 of them and took them to school the next day.
When we pick a name for a child some of us want to choose a name that portrays a positive message, or meaning. Some decide to join the mother and father’s name together to show ingenuity.
However, for the most part, the former is mostly chosen.
Before we even meet our children or experience their character, we give them a name and look along at the growth of the child to see if they live up to their names.
Some children are even born into families where the generational name or title is passed down the line. Oftentimes these children can bring shame on family names and parents may wish to be out of the spotlight at that moment.
Not so with our Lord: All of His names describe some part of the essence of his person.
His names are his because of who he is.
The names of the Lord can’t be ascribed to anyone else because they were created in earthly language as a reference to him only.
Why didn’t God leave the name choosing to Mary?
He didn’t because, before he came to earth, his name was already chosen. Matt.1:21 – He shall be called Jesus because he will save people from their sins.
At the name of Jesus; demons tremble. When the legion of demons was removed from the man that lived in the cemetery, they quickly recognized Jesus and asked him if he had come to torment them already. The name of Jesus is our armor.
We pray to God through Jesus’ name. As a matter of fact, it is only through the name of Jesus that we have access to the Father. John.14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.“

At school that day, I received about three blue ink pens as a prize. To this day I still like those pens and the way that they write. I might not have realized the power that was behind the 1000 names I wrote then but I do now.

Scriptures for Today:
The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
Proverbs.18:10
the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
